Online/ phone Behaviour and Training Consultations

Phone/ online Behaviour Consultation

These are available while the coronavirus pandemic prevents face-to-face sessions taking place, but they are also likely to remain an option in the future for those who live outside of Sarah's normal working area.

(A half hour practical training session can now be booked in addition, after you have completed the phone consultation process.)

If your pet has had a sudden change in behaviour, or it involves aggression, it's best to have a chat with your vet to make sure there isn't an underlying health issue.

There are several stages to these Behaviour Consultations:

- behaviour consultation form (see below) filled out and emailed or posted to Sarah

- additional questions answered via email (preferably) or post, if Sarah feels she needs more information

- 40 minute conversation on the phone or via Zoom

- an individual behaviour/ training plan will then be emailed (or posted) to you, based on the information given

- you then have the opportunity to ask questions about the plan via email/ post

- a second 20 minute conversation on the phone or via Zoom to discuss progress/ difficulties

- the opportunity to email (for a month after the consultation) if you need extra advice on the issues covered

The cost is £40, payable by a cheque in the post, or bank transfer. Details of how to do this will be given when you have requested a consultation. Please note that payment needs to be received before the first 30 minute conversation.

Face-to-face Behaviour and Training Sessions

Behaviour Consultations

Please note - hour long behaviour consultations are not currently available - you will need to arrange a phone consultation.

Sessions are based on understanding why your dog/ horse/ cat is behaving the way they are, and finding solutions that work for both of you. Sarah will be training you, rather than your pet. Dog behaviour sessions will include practical training, depending on the issues presented. However, there is no practical training element for equine behaviour sessions.

If there has been a sudden change of behaviour, or if it involves aggression, it is recommended that you get your pet checked by your vet first, to make sure there isn't an underlying medical issue.

Please note that Sarah's 'working area' is Tonbridge/ Tunbridge Wells/ Sevenoaks, and the areas in between. If you live further away, meetings can take place at a local park or suitable cafe.

Appointments are available in the morning or afternoon.

Behaviour sessions are 1hr long, and cost £70. Payment can be made on the day by cash or cheque, or in advance via bank transfer.

A summary of the consultation will be emailed or posted to you afterwards, which will include recommendations, and an individual training plan. You will have the opportunity to email/call Sarah with any questions you have.

You will receive a follow up email or phone call about two weeks after your consultation, to check on progress.

Please contact Sarah for more information.

30 minute intensive behaviour/ training sessions

These are special sessions to cope with the restrictions and safety requirements during the pandemic:

- Social distancing rules will be in place, so rather than me training your dog, I will be directing you to do the training.

- If I feel you will require specific equipment, I will tell you this before booking the session, to give you time to purchase it (as I will not be able to lend it to you during the session).

- Sessions will be outdoors only, either in a park, large garden, or other outdoor space.

- If you, or anyone in your family, or bubble, has symptoms of coronavirus when the session is due to take place, a face to face meeting will not be possible, and the training will need to be carried out via phonecall/ zoom instead.

- These sessions will cover basic obedience training, as well as helping you to improve any issues that you are experiencing.

Puppy training sessions (for dogs 6 months and under) are 30 minutes long, and cost £25.

Behaviour/ training sessions (for dogs over 6 months) are 30 minutes long, and cost £30. (An initial phone/online behaviour consultation may be required depending on the issues you are experiencing).

Payment is via bank transfer in advance, or cash/ cheque on the day.

Please contact Sarah for more details.

Dog Training classes at Leigh village hall

For all ages, from puppies to oldies.

Leigh Village Hall (near Tonbridge. If using a sat nav use the postcode for the Fleur de Lis pub which is very close. Parking can be tricky, please park down side roads or around the green - give yourself enough time to walk to the hall, and for your dog to have a wee, before the class starts.)

Classes cover basic obedience training, as well as some fun stuff, and a few advanced skills. It's also a chance for you and your dog to make friends. Any behaviour issues can be discussed during, or after class.

Generally these classes are for sociable dogs only, but nervous dogs in training can come - please discuss this with Sarah.

Classes are 45 mins, and cost £12 per class.

Please email or text Sarah if you want to book a place.

Things to bring: a completed registration form (below); a towel/ bed for your dog to settle on during class; a short lead (i.e. not an extendable one); and a plentiful supply of small, tasty food treats.

Sarah's Training philosophy

To help our pets, whether that's dogs, cats, horses or smaller pets, we first need to help ourselves. That's why training sometimes doesn't work on it's own. It's a frustrating aspect of life to realise that we have to change ourselves, in order to change those around us, whether that's people or animals.

Taking time to understand an animal's behaviour is very important, but that applies to your own behaviour as well. Your pet isn't able of tell you why they're acting the way they are: you have to do some detective work, and change some of the things you're doing. You can't force them to be perfect, in the same way that others cannot force you to be perfect. But if you can change, then you can cause your dog/ horse to change too. The key is discovering how to do that.

Sarah will help you discover the causes of your pet's behaviour, and guide you towards solutions that will make life easier (and hopefully more rewarding), for both you and your pet. Because all things in life are connected, Sarah may also take a more holistic approach, for example looking into diet and routines, and the relationship between you and your pet. This is why Sarah sometimes calls herself an 'animal behaviour life coach'.
